Business communications. Save time and money whilst improving your English!

On our PINFIELD intensive or immersion courses a common theme that often comes up (surgir), is how little time we all have during our working day. We are always in meetings, answering emails, giving presentations, talking on the telephone etc… and never seem to have time to do our actual (real) work.

When I am in classes or on a course I often hear chatty (parlanchín) people making long telephone calls where too many things are discussed (hablado) and eventually (finalmente, con el tiempo) the main (principal) work topic is tackled or dealt with (abordado), but then more chatting (parloteo, cháchara) and the call ends at last. I hear about business meetings where people arrive any time they like, they have their mobile telephones with them, they send whatsapps and check messages, people interrupt each other, again there is a lot of chatting, there is no structure, many different themes are discussed and sometimes the meeting runs out of time (quedarse sin tiempo) and everyone leaves with no decisions or agreements being made.

Students also show me either very short or lengthy (extenso) emails again where it is difficult to know the main theme of the email and what action needs (tiene que) to be taken. Students also like to practise their presentations skills (habilidades) so show me their very lengthy presentations, with slides over loaded (sobrecargada) with too much information, with no structure and with no ways to grab the attention (llamar la atención) of the audience (auditorio, público).

This is where there are some cultural differences between English speakers and Hispanic speakers. So here is some of our advice: try to be snappy (conciso) all of the time, and polite (cortés), professional and private (reservado) at the same time. Keep the focus on the main work themes to save time and don’t be afraid to look rude (maleducado)! There are many polite expressions you can use to get the discussion back on track (reconducir la discussion)! And try and leave chatting for your coffe break or lunch time with your work colleagues (compañeros de trabajo)!

We will encourage you to build up (desarrollar, construir)  telephone and email skills learning when and how to use each of them differently in different situations with some vocabulary and grammar.

We will also focus on the more time consuming ways to communicate. The student will learn how and when to create reports to communicate information and how to manage and participate in meetings, telephone calls and presentations, taking into consideration cultural differences when working internationally, using business English, and learn how to save (ahorrar) time during your business day.
